Well you wouldn't think that something as insignificant as socks would be something that I would be writing about but I want to tell you about what has been happening here. Each of the residents of Aleh Negev are bathed and dressed each morning by the staff. By the time I arrive at 7:30 AM I am the one to put on their socks and shoes. They are waiting for this in order to be taken to either school or the workshop. The other morning we were scrambling for socks for a few of the residents. I had been noticing how the house is managed, with set times for cleaning, receiving their freshly made foods for us to prepare at each meal and the delivery of both fresh linens and clothing from the laundry. This is a well oiled machine! Yet on this day, the house manager was beside herself looking for socks, these residents wear special shoes with individualized orthotics and must be comfortable in their shoes. What was going on? Well today I suggested that we pull all the single socks from each of the homes and try to come up with some matching pairs. The staff insist, for good reason that the residents are aware that they are wearing clean, proper clothing - right down to their socks. They liked my idea. Next thing I knew, after escorting the residents to their proper places and feeding those left behind breakfast, I was told the socks are coming. So there I worked with approximately 400 single socks trying to make pairs. Not to toot my own horn, but I became the hero! About 25 pairs came out of the pile. I then initiated a new system where each pile per colour group was put into a single mesh bag for easily matching when a new single comes in. While this isn't rocket science or what I expected to do on this journey, every little bit helps. So that no resident is anxiously waiting for their socks to start their day.❤️
The snooze room....more on that to come.
